Pulpotomy
When there is one or more severely decayed teeth in teenage patients, the treatment decision is whether to retain or extract them.
In most cases a pulpotomy, which is less invasive than root canal treatment, removes the infected nerve tissue in the crown while preserving the nerve in the root. This procedure is usually performed to save primary teeth but it can also save adult teeth too.
Following pulpotomy, a strong covering and structural support must be provided to protect the tooth from any bacteria. This is carried out by placing on a new dental crown made of either silver (stainless steel) or white (zirconia) material, cemented onto the treated tooth until it naturally exfoliates. Pre-manufactured crowns can easily be altered and shaped for a secure fit, allowing for just a single appointment fitting.
