Children’s functional appliances

Why choose Toothbeary for your child’s functional appliances?

Functional braces in London

The term “functional braces” refers to a broad range of orthodontic devices. Similar to traditional braces, they have been used in orthodontics for over 100 years and aim to modify growth to achieve structural changes while the patient is still growing. Functional appliances are removable appliances designed to apply a gentle physiological force that can influence bone, muscle, and jaw structure.

The teeth are positioned within a delicate balance of soft tissues, like lips, cheeks, and tongue. If there are underlying issues (like mouth breathing, incorrect tongue position or infantile swallowing) it can impact the dental alignment and function.

Establishing correct muscle patterns early on is crucial for optimal jaw and dental development. This ensures proper growth, creating enough space for teeth to align respectively.

Functional braces FAQ's

Who is best suited to functional braces?

Typically, functional appliances are suggested for children between the ages of 7-11. However, optimal timing for functional braces varies depending on the patient’s specific needs and readiness for treatment.

Certain functional appliances are typically more effective between ages 10 and 12, whilst others are considered to be more effective at an earlier age. Regular check-ups with a dentist/specialist trained in early orthodontics are crucial from an early age to ensure a timely approach to treatment.

Can you eat with functional braces?

You should remove your functional braces and keep them safe in its case during mealtimes. The braces should typically be worn for approximately 16 hours a day, allowing enough time for eating throughout the day.

How long do you have to wear functional braces?

Functional braces reach their full effectiveness when worn for at least 16 hours a day. The duration of the treatment depends on the severity of the dental problem and the patient’s commitment. While a typical treatment lasts around 18 months, it may take longer in certain cases.

Why functional braces and not fixed braces?

Fixed braces are typically used once all permanent teeth are through, they use precise tooth movements to achieve optimal dental alignment. If there is an underlying functional problem, the fixed brace still will achieve a good result, but there is a high risk for relapse as the underlying problem is not corrected.

Functional appliances on the other hand are designed to correct these problems during the child’s natural growth pattern.

Children's dentist review from Google Business

“We can’t recommend Toothbeary highly enough – we travelled from Staffordshire to have our children treated here as they offer an unparalleled range of options for treatment that most dentists, NHS or private, simply don’t seem prepared to offer for children. Every moment of a Toothbeary visit, from the greeting at Reception, to the interactions with the dentists and nurses, to the gold coin and balloon to take home, is wonderfully well managed, professional, friendly and tailored to the children.”
