The primary molars have an important function of maintaining the space for the permanent teeth.

If there is early loss of primary molars, eating and chewing can be badly affected. Fixed or removable space maintainers are available.

Fixed Space Maintainer

Fixed Space maintainer are cemented and will be removed when the next permanent tooth is growing into the space.

The material is non allergic stainless steel. There are no special techniques to clean it, but when it was fit in right after an extraction the gum can be sore, therefore it is even more important that this area is cleaned perfectly.

If your child is having discomfort afterwards it is most likely, that the gum is infected around the space maintainer. This can happen, when the area is not cleaned properly.

You can let your child rinse with salt water, camomile or sage tea. Of course you can always come in to have it checked by us.

Also dislodged space maintainer can cause some discomfort. It can be re-cemented easily, so let us know and book an appointment as soon as it happens.

Removable Space Maintainer

Removable Space maintainer should be worn for a minimum of 14hrs per day/night period, even during vacation. After the extraction an impression must be taken and this will be sent to a lab, where the removable space maintainer will be made for your child. Your child can choose colour and even a picture to have on it.

If you wish, it is possible to put a false tooth on that missing spot, which then will make the regular space maintainer into an aesthetic space maintainer.

Your child is constantly growing, therefore it can happen, that the space maintainer does not fit after a while. A new impression and a new space maintainer is then necessary.

Aesthetic Space Maintainer

When the primary teeth are lost at a very young age due to "early childhood caries" or accidents, they have to be replaced. It is possible to have a fixed space maintainer that is aesthetically presentable. This space maintainer is made of artificial teeth, with orthodontic wire and molar bands they are cemented on to the posterior teeth. For optimal bearer comfort, good oral hygiene and regular follow-up is necessary. Every child has the right to maintain a beautiful smile even though they might have lost some teeth!

The hygiene is very important. The Space maintainer must be cleaned by a different toothbrush twice a day. You can also use sterile tablets every week.
