More than 40% of all 5 year-old children in the UK have experienced dental decay ...
Dental disease is the most common reason why children receive a general anaesthetic in the UK.
The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry www.bspd.co.uk
As reported in the 2003 survey of children's dental health, only ten per cent of five-year-old children in England had at least one filled primary tooth although forty-one percent had obvious decay in the primary teeth. Fifty-four percent of the eight-year-olds in England had obvious decay experience but only twenty-two percent had fillings. The decay statistics had not significantly changed since 1983 suggesting that they will not change much in the future unless unanticipated advances in caries research should take place.
Surprisingly the same survey reported that the severity of tooth decay among 5-year-olds was not strongly associated with school deprivation level and also not related to socio-economic status. The five and eight year olds with decay experience had the same amount whether from managerial and professional backgrounds or from routine and manual backgrounds.
The Toothbeary Dental Practice Oral Hygiene Club will also cater to children without oral disease. Today's parents are concerned about and willing to financially invest in their children's health and appearance. The general trend towards dental aesthetics and preventive care is of major importance in paediatric dental facilities. The best looking teeth are those that are absolutely clean and healthy.
