tips for dental visit
where did the fear go?
Dear Parents,
A fear of the dentist is not inherited!
That is why our practice is equiped and organised in such a way that children experience a fear-free treatment, introducing positive attitudes towards dental visits. Your co-operation would help immensely as you are the childs parent and main advocate. An appropriate choice of words when talking about dentistry and dental visits could help your child positively, thereby supporting our treatment strategy. We suggest that during your child's dental visit you illustrate your own opinion of the practice and enable your child to share it with you if it is positive. This way the child can familiarise him or her self with a new environment and build a positive and active doctor-patient relationship.
If you have not had positive dental experiences yourself as a child, please realize that your children have the advantage of a good 20 - 30 years of dental scientific progress and need not experience the same type of traumatic treatment as may have been common previously.
Sincerely,
Your Practice Team
This is the best way that you can support your child!
BEFORE THE DENTAL VISIT
- Express your own dental experience but only when it is positive!
- If you are not rich in positive experiences, then better to remain silent.
- Avoid denial!
- "that will not hurt" implies "it can hurt."
- Do not promise any reward!
- The feeling of "must win the gift" is a great pressure on the child
DURING THE DENTAL VISIT
- Inform us of any peculiarity or sicknesses of your child.
- We want to be totally flexible according to the needs of your child.
- Let us manage your child!
- Children cannot listen to two adults at the same time.
- Let your child answer!
- Your child should be the centre of attention.
- Praise your child after the treatment!
- This will build their self-confidence, something new to explore
PLEASE BEAR IN MIND!
Only through good parent-doctor team-work can we achieve successful dental treatment for your child.
